Manny And The Flintstones

I will admit to having great love for the Flintstones. It was on everyday when you got home from school and it was the perfect way to unwind with a snack. When the Flintstones was finished it was off to my room to read comics until supper.

In college my buddy Mark often invited me to lunch at his parents place and to watch some Flintstones before heading back to class. He lived only a stone's throw from the college so it wasn't a trek to go there. There were always day old muffins and leftover fried chicken lying around from the two food businesses his parents ran in the mall. Instead of throwing out food that was made that day, they just brought it home. Their kids and their kid's friends could always be counted on to take care of the left-overs like the bunch of raccoons that they were. Food AND entertainment, I was sold. We all know there is nothing better than day old fried chicken and some cartoons.

Mark (who will be addressed in the future of this post as Manny) really loved the Flintstones. He knew all about the show from having watched the series many times over. This is what happens to a kid that only has three TV channels in his life. He had no access to other cartoons for comparison. To him, the Flintstones were golden and as sophisticated as any live action series ever to be on television.

He and I almost died coming back to the college from his house after one of these Flintstones lunches. He had too much speed coming around the turn and there was so much ice that he couldn't keep the car from sliding into the ditch. In all the insanity of that moment, Manny decided to make me feel more frightened by saying, "We're losing it Cal! We're losing it!" I wanted to say back to him, "Who is this 'WE' Kemo Sabe? You are the one controlling the vehicle" but I couldn't form the words.

Then, after several sphincter clenching seconds, we came to a stop still on the road but facing in the opposite direction to where we were going.

I have many other great stories about Manny. I have a lot of good memories about the time when we were friends. So this post is for you Manny. Thanks for the good times.

Dino actually TALKS in this episode and he has a great condescending attitude. This dinosaur is a born salesman who has to comment on everything he see. He's got charm and personality and he is more than a match for Fred and Barney. Many funny bits but the branch breaking joke was both funny AND smart - sophisticated even.

The Flintstones fit in nicely between Warner Bros. and Rocky and Bullwinkle. I liked them a tiny bit more than the Jetsons. They were all cool. I wanna go back.
