The A-Z Blogging Challenge - The Letter B - Buck Rogers

In the late 70s the whole effect of 'Star Wars' success found 'Battlestar Galactica' and 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' rushed into theatres. By the following fall, both shows had been retooled into television series.

I loved Buck Rogers the best. He was a man out of time who got crynogenically frozen in his spaceship and returned to Earth 500 years later where, instead of becoming a museum oddity, seemed to be in the heat of the action in his future world. I liked how this show never really explained all the illogic that surrounded it.

I was of the age when this show was near perfect entertainment for me. The visual effects were just that side of good so I never missed a show. Not that parts of it didn't make me cringe. I hated that stupid robot 'Tweeky' who for some reason thought he was witty.

I did, however, love Erin Grey as the beautiful Wilma Deering (who was endeering - see what I did there?) and how could I hate a man like Gil Gerard as Buck Rogers who brought Disco back from the past. I saw a picture of him a few years ago where he was a hundred pounds heavier and covered in flop sweat. It's not how I want to remember him.

And a great homage to a classic. Buck Rogers now there is something work remembering. Now I was not alive when it was at it's peak but I am an educated enough sci fi dork that I know exactly what you are talking about.

So hooray on a great use for the letter B I had several B's when I was thinking of mine but when you read mine you will see why i chose it.

can't wait for C

I LOVED this show! Buck was a hero, Wilma was amazing in a way my little kid eyes had no idea and - being a kid - I liked Twiki, too. :)

You'll have to forgive me if I don't share you enthusiasm for Erin Gray's Wilma Deering, based solely on this one picture. The angle of her torso in this shot and flattening nature of the lighting on a white colored uniform combined makes her look flat chested plus that helmet covering a good third of her head she looks a bit alien and sexless.

I'm not saying I want every woman to in SciFi/Fantasy to wear scanty or revealing clothing. In fact I'd say this this uniform might be more practical and representative of gender equality in the future of space travel than the the uniforms than say "Star Trek", though I can't be sure since I haven't actually since them in action.

That helmet is really what bothers me though. What propose does it serve exactly? I look at it and like she's going to slap two beer cans on the side and start slurping away!

I didn't like much that show, but I always watched it. Tweeky was a lame bad copy of any Star Wars droid.

Well Done; I so remember this show...this dates me doesn't it ;-D

My mom thought Tweeky was so cute and funny. I don't remember so I guess that means it was utterly forgettable. The rest of the show I liked.

Ah, the memories. I'll admit to having this DVD collection on my shelf.

I met Erin Grey a couple years ago at Planet Comicon in Kansas City. Very cool lady.

(And to TS's comment above - the 24&1/2 Century was also pretty awesome).

Yo Kal, You are the man. I LOVED Buck Rodgers when I was a wee lad, and now I am reliving it with my son Mikey through Netflix Instant (The whole series is there... check it!) He likes it despite the cheestastic 70's props and effects... probably why he loves A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back so much (Plus the kid is only 8... he is a legend!)

On another note, I got to interview the lovely Erin Grey at the 2010 Big Apple Comic Con. Tommy L & I asked her a ton of questions and she was super cool. Check it out here:

My man Kal... keep the letters coming!!!

I recall the old black and white serials. They used to show them on TV when I was younger. Then there was the movie that came out in the early 80s. Saw it, but don't remember much about it.
Buck is legendary.
