no arguement from me Cal, the Seven is totally friggin awesome! i may get you in a snit but as cool as those guys are (and they are VERY cool!)i feel that Eli Wallach comes THIS close to stealing the film from everyone!! I'm a big fan of Director John Sturges and the Seven is certainly one of his best.
and does that movie have one of the catchiest scores ever or what!
I agree with you...what makes the heroes so great is matching them with a great villain. And Eli is a great villan. Like Magneto you almost sympathize with him because of what he must do to feed his men. This movie is so rich in themes. Both the heroes and the villains are living in a world that is changing right before their eyes and they are powerless to stop it. Its just a matter of time.
I was always amazed at how well Yul (one of my favorite actor) wore the cowboy mantle so well. No wonder they choose him for 'Westworld'.

McQueen is so cool he tried his best to upstage Yul all through the film, watch him in the background he's always fiddling with something..Yul knew.And don't forget Bronson,Coburn and Vaughn (who got Coburn his part in the film) all way cool.
And I usually HATE Robert Vaughn with the heat of a red hot sun but I like him in this. I actually am watching this now for the hundredth time since we talked about it. I am having trouble with my blog so its a nice distraction.
very well said Cal, a colorful hero needs an equally colorful villain! in the case of the batman films, the villain upstages the hero in a big way, but i digress... i said it in my blog once, but i think its a no-brainer that Wallach got the role of Tuco in The good the bad and the ugly because of his work in the Seven. you KNOW Sergio was a fan of it as well as Shane, The Searchers and a zillion other American westerns.

Drake - yeah apparently McQueen was quite worried he was gonna get lost in the shuffle in that film because he had so little dialogue, but Sturges knew very well that Steve dont need to say anything to make his presence known. Even in the Great Escape he doesnt say much but he's totally the Star of that film and then some.
Robert Vaughn, one of those guys that always plays the same kind of guy but i like him in the Seven and in Bullit too. Horst Bucholz (sp?) is the weak one in the seven to me. tried WAY too hard to upstage his co stars but sorry aint gonna happen. he tried the same thing in One, Two, Three but just what did he think he was gonna do to upstage james Cagney?!?!?!?
Perceptive Comment Drake! I've always thought McQueen's coolness was badly compromised by his seeming to THINK about it so hard: "Now I'm going to drill this really tough look from my pale blue eyes...now I'm going to fuss and fidget and steal a scene from Yul..." Yul didn't have to give himself pep talks and put on poses, he just WAS. And I really, really liked his Evil Pharaoh gig in The Ten Commandments.(Cal, you seem to too!)
